چکیده

This appendix analyzes an example duopoly setting, which is a direct counterpart of the monopoly setting analyzed in Section 2 of the paper. The analysis shows that the results of the paper are robust with respect to several extension of my basic model. Specifically: • Appendix A.2 studies a setting where, in addition to praising themselves, firms can bad-mouth their competitors. • Appendix A.3 studies a setting where there are multiple forums and each consumer only visits a subset of them. • Appendix A.4 studies a setting where firms can also imperfectly signal their quality through prices. Consider a setting where two competing firms, A and B, simultaneously introduce imperfect substitute products in a new market. The Strategic Use of Consumer Search Cost*

Through their communications mix, firms make decisions that have implications for the ease with which consumers can search for product information. Multi-vendor electronic catalogs (E-catalogs) are an increasingly important component of Internet and Intranet-based procurement solutions as they provide key support for the information-gathering procurement stage. We provide a framework to evaluate three multi-vendor E-catalog models: the „DoIt-Yourself“ model, where the buying firm constructs its own E-catalog, the Third-Party E-catalog Inte...

Choosing to Be Strategic: Implications of the Endogenous Adoption of Forward-Looking Purchasing Behavior on Multiperiod Pricing

Pricing over multiple periods under forward-looking, strategic consumer purchasing behavior has received significant recent research attention; however, whether consumers actually benefit from this behavior and would voluntarily choose to be strategic has not been previously considered. We explore this question, and show that many consumers have lower surplus if they are strategic than if they ...

A non-standard approach to a market with boundedly rational consumers and strategic firms. Part I: A microfoundation for the evolution of sales

In our model, individual consumers follow simple behavioral decision rules based on imitation and habit as suggested in consumer research, social learning , and related fields. Demand can be viewed as the outcome of a population game whose revision protocol is determined by the consumers' behavioral rules. The consumer dynamics are then analyzed in order to explore the demand side and first imp...
